Last week the 7th graders took a trip to The National Museum of Mexican Art and then to Don Juan's Restaurant for tacos. At the museum, students were taken on a guided tour of the Día De Los Muertos Exhibit called "La Muerte Niña.” Students also explored 3 other exhibits at the museum which featured art from many different artists of Mexican descent. After the museum, we continued our day with a fun lunch which included tacos, quesadillas, and flan for dessert! The 7th graders had a blast learning about and experiencing Mexican art, culture, and food right here in Chicago!
Last week the 7th and 8th graders celebrated The Day of the Dead or El Día de los Muertos in Spanish class! Some of our cultural activities included tasting "Pan de Muerto" or Day of the Dead bread, decorating "calacas" or ceramic magnet skulls for students to bring home, and bringing in candles, flowers and picture memories for our "ofrenda" or offering. The day of the dead is a cultural celebration of life, where we remember those who have passed and is celebrated in various Spanish-speaking countries. Take a look at our Día de los Muertos celebration in Spanish class!

Pi Day occurs every year on March 14th (3.14). This year, the students celebrated the Ultimate Pi Day (3.1415 since the year is 2015) one day early on Friday, March 13th. During math class, the students had fun listening to songs and watching movie clips about pi and had a competition reciting the digits of pi. They also made a personalized souvenir and each student enjoyed eating a slice of pi, of course! It was fun celebrating this once-in-a-lifetime Pi Day! Jamie and Sachio Pi Number CompetitionAfter three days, PARCC testing has come to a close. The kids did great and were rewarded with fun activities pictured here. We also surprised Dr. Russo with a cake for his birthday!
Last week in Spanish class students worked in groups to prepare a restaurant skit entirely in Spanish. They performed their skits in class at a table we set up to make the setting more realistic. Students chose a background to enhance their skits and were extremely creative with the dialogues they created. They used vocabulary from our current chapter, focusing on how to order at a restaurant. Additionally, each group designed a menu to use during their skit that contained foods researched from a Spanish-speaking country of their choosing. Take a look at some pictures and videos from our fun Spanish Restaurant skits!
On Thursday, the 8th graders became surgeons for the day and each dissected a sheep eye. The students have been studying all about the nervous system and how each of their 5 senses work. This eye dissection helped them to gain deeper understanding into how the eye works and what each of the parts actually looks like. Several students in each class were also chosen to be lab assistants. They helped lead the eye dissection and also greatly helped with guiding their peers through the difficult parts of the lab.
Today the students enjoyed an ice cream party as a reward for first quarter grades and watched "Indiana Jones" in the auditorium. Dr. Russo also recognized the Girls' Varsity Basketball team for winning the division championship this week! There were all smiles all around as we kick off the start of winter break!

The Falcons dominated the Fossils in soccer this year! Mr. Lopatka scored for the Fossils first and then Nathan Nguyen scored for the Falcons from midfield. With twenty seconds left in the game, Dario S. headed the ball into goal to break the tie! The Falcons were victorious and ended the game with a score of 2-1.
At the beginning of the unit, students were placed into "families" and given home country and were asked to create historically accurate roles for each member. Each group then created a digital story on their Chromebooks in class that included pictures, music, voice-overs, and most importantly their family's story and hopes for a new life in America. The day they arrived in America, our students dressed the part and came to school in costumes reflective of what immigrants might wear in 1910. Costumes included old dresses, beards, top hats, and even an eye patch and a toilet paper company! Students arrived in Ellis Island (the auditorium lobby) and hoped to get into America (the auditorium) by the end of the simulation. Just one problem, they had to pass a medical test, citizenship test, and the strict workers that awaited them. They had to do all this with only 5 words of English and limited funds. Many families came down with sicknesses, got caught cheating and stealing, and many were deported. But lucky enough for them, most, but not all students, got to the Land of Opportunity to fulfill their dreams in America. Many of the pictures capture the story of the day, but like anything in history, it is the stories that really capture the moment in time! Here at Fairview South our school does it’s best to help our children not only learn what respect is, but how to show it through programs like the “Falcon 5” and “4 to Soar”. This year we wanted to involve the whole Fairview community! On Saturday, September 13, the Fairview PTA with the help of Fairview Cares (a program designed to create an environment of philanthropy and create opportunities for Fairview athletes to give back to their school and community) we hosted our first 5K! The money raised will be used to fund safe and community building PTA activities throughout the year as well as go towards the end of year gift that will go to selected school departments.
