The Colony presentations were a success! Mr. Berglund’s and Ms. Cronin’s core classes worked collaboratively to create new colonies in the developing lands of the New World. Each group presented their plan in the auditorium to convince investors that their colony will be the most successful. The student groups created an interactive presentation, decorated a poster and handed out brochures to visually represent their colony’s plan. Some groups created commercials, wrote and performed songs, and even created dances to appeal to their investors! After the presentations, students and teachers used their “Berglund Bucks” and “Cronin Coins” to invest in different colonies. The winners from the morning core were from “Deal-a-ware”, which included Kylie, Lauren, Karina and Aonel. The winners from Ms. Cronin’s afternoon core were from “North Cronin”, which included Jordyn, Natalia, Divya and Niki. Congratulations to the winners and great job to all the groups!

This week in Spanish class the 7th grade students learned body parts vocabulary. To practice this, students worked in groups to trace a student and then label and color their life size drawing. The students had a great time doing this! They worked together and were able to display their knowledge of the newly learned vocabulary through this fun activity. Check it out!
On November 1st the 7th and 8th grade Spanish classes celebrated The Day of the Dead or El Día de los Muertos! Some of our activities included tasting day of the dead bread, making posters of items that would be sold at a traditional market for the Day of the Dead, decorating tiny ceramic skulls, and bringing in candles and flowers for our offering. The day of the dead is a celebration of life in remembering those who have passed and is celebrating in various Spanish-speaking countries. Take a look at our Día de los Muertos celebration in Spanish class!
On Tuesday, October 29 the varsity boys and girls 8th grade soccer teams challenged the Fairview teachers and staff to a soccer match. The Fossils were victorious by a score of 2-1. Jonathon C. scored for the Falcons and Mr. McBride and Coach B. netted goals for the Fossils. The weather warmed up just enough for a spirited contest!
Many historians believe that 1 out of every 4 Americans can date their family tree through the immigration center at Ellis Island in Manhattan, New York from the 1890s to the 1950s when the doors shut for good. Fairview 8th graders had the opportunity to "step" in the shoes of some of their relatives by taking part in a simulation of the immigration process at Ellis Island. At the beginning of the unit, students were placed into "families" and given home country and were asked to create historically accurate roles for each member. Each group then created a digital story on their Chromebooks in class that included pictures, music, voice-overs, and most importantly their family's story and hopes for a new life in America. The day they arrived in America, our students dressed the part and came to school in costumes reflective of what immigrants might wear in 1910. Costumes included old dresses, beards, top hats, and even an eye patch and a toilet paper company! Students arrived in Ellis Island (the auditorium lobby) and hoped to get into America (the auditorium) by the end of the simulation. Just one problem, they had to pass a medical test, citizenship test, and the strict workers that awaited them. They had to do all this with only 5 words of English and limited funds. Many families came down with sicknesses, got caught cheating and stealing, and many were deported. But lucky enough for them, most, but not all students, got to the Land of Opportunity to fulfill their dreams in America. Many of the pictures capture the story of the day, but like anything in history, it is the stories that really capture the moment in time! |
