Last week the 8th graders participated in “The Ellis Island Experience.” Students experienced what the journey was like for the new immigrants in the U.S. during the early 1900’s. Each class was split into groups, assigned a country, and had to create a digital story showcasing the country and background of their immigrant family. Friday, the students went through an Ellis Island simulation which entailed each family attempting to get through “New York” together. During the simulation, the students took a mock literacy assessment, medical examination, and mental competency test. Everyone needed to pass each exam in order to be admitted into the United States and any ill, illiterate, or unworthy immigrants were sent to the “Deportation Unit” holding area where they were questioned by Mr. Berglund. At the final checkout, Mr. Lopatka checked each immigrant’s paperwork and stamped their passports for the final approval. Watch the slideshow and video below to follow along on the 8th grade immigrant journey!
